A friend who engages in cross-border aid activities in the genocide afflicted war-zone of Burma sent me this link, which, in Burmese, is the equivalent of an old wild-west wanted poster, with my photo on it. At a glance, the link appears to be a website of the KNU/KNLA, the ethnic Karen resistance group, featured in the film, “Rambo IV.” The site implies that I am wanted by the rebels, which makes no sense, since the only crime I have committed, if in fact it is a crime, is supporting the rebels.

Google Alert Burma duly reported of how Burma is near completion of nuclear weapon on the 18th instant and of how its Defense Minister boasts that by 2020 Burma would be one of the greatest nations in Southeast Asia. Given the economic reality of Burma compounded with its gross mismanagement and human rights violations is it but an empty dream or a reality?

The Ethnic Nationalities Council (ENC) is concerned at the continuing lack of meaningful response to the food crisis in Chin State that is now putting an entire population in western Burma on the brink of starvation and a famine. Massive rat infestations in the region due to a once-in-fifty-years cyclical bamboo flowering have resulted in the loss of most of local food productions, which account for most of the food source for the Chin people.

Are we (the ethno-democratic forces) in the doldrums, now that Mr.Gambari mission has utterly failed? If so what should be our strategy and to plot this we have to analyse it and tap on the plausible strategy. Many people were outraged at the Saffron Revolution and the slow response to cyclone Nargis and want to punish the Generals by bringing them to International Criminal Court, in The Hague; others want more sanctions and want Burma to be expelled from ASEAN. Some group work for Burma to be expelled from the UN. Others opted for UN and US intervention.

According to the government press conference, afterwards, the Shan State Academics Consultative Council was formed. The Council would not only be based in Shan State, but would also have branches in each of the six remaining states and the seven divisions. The government added, however, that the term “genuine federal union” can be easily misunderstood. They accused the Shan leaders of actually intending to use this term to get people's support but that their real intent was to one day secede from the union and establish a separate state.

The SPDC's `Road Map' has consistently excluded the winners of the 1990 general elections. It has also ignored constitutional recommendations made by the ethnic nationalities. The military's constitution concentrates power in the hands of the president and the army chief. There is no independent judiciary. There is no decentralization of administrative powers. The military remains above the law and is independent of the government that will be elected in 2010. The military's new constitution will not lead to a democracy, `disciplined' or otherwise.
