The <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Burma military regime held a press conference to describe the Shan leaders' activities. Even from the government statement read at the press conference, it is clear that the Shan leaders were merely exercising their lawful right to peacefully assemble, associate and express themselves. At the press conference, the government announced that the Shan leaders gave some speeches and read statements at a meeting that resulted in a recommendation to form a consultative council. According to the government press conference, afterwards, the Shan State Academics Consultative Council was formed. The Council would not only be based in Shan State, but would also have branches in each of the six remaining states and the seven divisions. After the meeting, there was a dinner at “Sein Taung Tan” restaurant in Taung Gyi Township paid for by the Shan State Army. The government added, however, that the term “genuine federal union” can be easily misunderstood. They accused the Shan leaders of actually intending to use this term to get people's support but that their real intent was to one day secede from the union and establish a separate state.

U GAMBIRA and ASHIN NAYAKA provide a rare glimpse into the movement behind Myanmar’s monk- led uprising. Their message: the uprising is not over and the world must keep up the pressure. Religious orders of monks have been the face of Myanmar (Burma) since Buddhism was introduced here more than 1000 years ago. For a monk to involve himself in politics or to hold a political post is contrary to the ethical code of Theravada Buddhism. But in Myanmar today, this spiritual philosophy, rooted in compassion and non-violence, has assumed unexpected dimensions of defiance and recalcitrance, as monks challenge the hegemony of the military junta that rules our country.

Now is the time to choose your destiny. The Military junta has reached its dusk. They are even demolishing the Buddhist religion as an enemy in order to cling on to power. The pools of blood in Ngwe Kyar Yan monastery depicts clearly the depths the junta are prepared to lower themselves. Even more disturbing is the news that all the monks, without exception, who were captured from that monastery were later murdered.
