Words impact meaning and they convey power – is 7th February a day to celebrate Shan ‘nation’ or ‘state’? When the elders from Shan State came together at Panglong, they were declaring the intention of establishing an independent Shan administration – independent from the British government colonial rule. When their statements were broadcast on Burma radio, it sent shock waves through the British establishment and cheers from the people of Shan States and the rest of Burma.

Stepping up their anti-democracy campaign another notch, the SPDC made a formal declaration regarding the SSA-S on 26th August 2006, by branding the freedom fighters as terrorists. For an illegal government that holds on to power by force this is ripe for pointing out the inconsistencies and falsehoods stated by the state-run organs of mis-information.

On 21st May 2006 we celebrate the 48th anniversary of Shan Revolution day, although some people call it Shan Resistance Day. This is the day that the armed struggle for independence and peace in Shan State had its beginning. I believe it is worth while to look at why Saw Yanda took up arms against Rangoon and see if either side have learnt any lessons.

As an occasional reader of the New Light of Myanmar, I thought it appropriate to review the paper’s output and reflect on the lack of free speech in Burma. This week’s 11th April edition serves our purpose well, as it contains the usual propaganda, lies and odd news items that expose the regime’s view of the world they live in.

The Minister of Propaganda Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan admitted on 9 th April 2006 that the SPDC are terrorists and have been creating diversionary acts to frighten the people of Burma. He admitted that para-military groups sponsored by the SPDC have been responsible for planting bombs in Rangoon and elsewhere to act as a means of justifying the SPDC repression and ever increasing clamp-down on any form of expression within the country.

I expect we read with little surprise and great outrage at the recent news that Lt-Col Sao Khun Kyaw and the 28 members of the SSA(S) brigade No 241 were sentenced to death for insurrection, drug-trafficking and use of child soldiers. We state here that these men are innocent of all charges levelled against them. The evidence against them is flimsy and has been concocted by the SPDC prosecutors. The severity of the sentence can mean only one thing – the regime is afraid of the power that our freedom fighters and our national Shan spirit holds against their failing grip on power.

The Union Day of Burma will fall on the 12th of February. As a day that should be a defining moment in our history, I would like to reflect on the how far we have come and where we want to go. This day is the 59th anniversary of the day on which the Shan, Kachin and Chin leaders signed the Panglong Agreement, with General Aung San, newly arrived back from discussions with the British government on the independence of Burma. We vest a great deal in this agreement, but if we read it now, it seems strange and doesn’t say all that we think it does. We need to read between the lines and interpret the meaning, to identify the ‘spirit of Panglong’. The agreement took several days for those present to prepare and to reach agreement, but what were they trying to achieve?
