TALK ON CURRENT SITUATION IN BURMA BY NANG CHARM TONG

This Tuesday Charm Tong, an impassioned public speaker
and well known activist from Burma, will be speaking at LSE.
Charm Tong
has emerged as one of the strongest international voices in a fight for more
humane and democratic leadership in Burma. Charm Tong is ethnically Shan, and
has fought to bring the plight of women and ethnic minorities under the military
rule to the forefront of the debate on Burma. For her dedication to human rights
issues in Burma, Charm Tong has received numerous human rights awards including
being named one of 1000 women nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize in 2005, Time
Asia’s Hero of the Year in 2005, and the Student’s Peace Prize in
2007.
Charm Tong co-founded SWAN (Shan Women’s Action Network), which is
best known for producing a report entitled “License to Rape” documenting the
systematic use of rape and intimidation by the military regime. Charm Tong is
also the co-founder and director or SSNY (School for Shan State National Youth).
The school provides social justice education to refugee youth, to promote youth
participation in social and political change in Burma.
Charm Tong will
speak on Tuesday about the current situation in Burma in light of the recent
unrest in the area.
