Shan National for Democracy is an organization founded on 30 November 2003 in Japan and campaigning for Democracy for Shan people, a major ethnic group in Burma.

General Background.
Many Shan People who have their own territory, culture and literature have been suffering under the injustice of rule by the Burmese Military Junta Government (SPDC) and many have had to flee from their homeland to foreign countries as refugees. Since 1958 Shan people have had no freedom to study their own language and conserve their culture and heritage, and have in many cases been forced instead to become homeless and forced labourers.

In response, many Shan people who cannot accept this kind of cruelty and injustice have resisted with arms and some who have moved abroad continue to protest and campaign against the Burmese Military Junta. Therefore, Shan people who live in Japan have formed Shan National for Democracy (Japan).

Our Objectives.
01. To conserve Shan language and literature so that it will be preserved for posterity and take its rightful place in the world of linguistics and literature.

02. To support the constitution of Federal Union States in order to share equal rights.

03. To help Shan people both in the country and abroad to come out of their hardship.

04. To exchange knowledge and inter-relationship with other Shan organizations both inside the country and abroad.

05. To support the Democracy movement growing both in the Union of Burma and other Asian countries.

06.To extend the hand of friendship with Japan and other countries around the world.
