Today (September 11) is the 63rd Birthday of Shan State Leader Hkun Htun Oo. From 3 to 5 pm, Tais / Shans, Shan National for Democracy in Japan took the leading part and with members of the Association United of Nationalities (Japan) and other democracy activists numbering around 200, demonstrated in front of the United Nations University that is situated at 53-70, Jungumae 5-Chome, Shibuya-Ku, Tokyo.

On 63rd Birthday of Shan State Leader Hkun Htun Oo

Today (September 11) is the 63rd Birthday of Shan State Leader Hkun Htun Oo. From 3 to 5 pm, Tais / Shans, Shan National for Democracy in Japan took the leading part and with members of the Association United of Nationalities (Japan) and other democracy activists numbering around 200, demonstrated in front of the United Nations University that is situated at 53-70, Jungumae 5-Chome, Shibuya-Ku, Tokyo.

UN Information Representative Officer No. 2 personally received the petition letters together with the collected petition signatures signed by Shans and the friends of Shan worldwide. The petition campaign for Hkun Htun Oo has been jointly conducted by Free Hkun Htun Oo Campaign and Global Shan Community – Thailand, United Kingdom, United States of America, Australia and Japan.

In the joint statement made, three issues were stated to urge co-operation of the world community especially the Association of South East Asian Countries (ASEAN)-

  1. To condemn the unlawful imprisonments and demand the immediate release of Hkun Htun Oo, other Shan State leaders and all political prisoners in Burma.
  2. To pressure Burma's military regime to immediately implement a nationwide ceasefire and begin tripartite dialogue with the National League for Democracy and genuine representatives of the ethnic nationalities to begin a meaningful process of political reform.
  3. To act immediately to bring Burma to the UN Security Council.
