7 August 2008 – Bangkok: A day before the US president leaves for Beijing, the Ethnic Nationalities Council (ENC) urges President Bush to initiate a "Multi-Party Talk on Burma" as a means of pushing forward the democratic reform agenda.

    CONDOLENCE ON KNU PRESIDENT'S DECEASED

The Shan Democratic Union, on behalf of the Shan people, is saddened by the deceased of the KNU President, Saw Ba Thin Sein on 22 May, 2008.  The SDU would like to reiterate that the joint KNU and SDU awareness-building initiative in European Union, for the period from December 2001 to October 2005, would not have taken place, without  the encouragement and blessing of Saw Ba Thin Sein.

Junta’s voting victory and Cyclone Nargis

The Burmese community in Australia felt anger towards the Burmese military junta after the release of the referendum voting results last week. On 15 May, the state-controlled media announced that 92.4% voters have turned “Yes” to the nationwide referendum in Burma. This announcement was made despite the Cyclone Nargis hitting central Burma in Irrawaddy and Rangoon divisions, leaving at least 134,000 dead or missing and up to 2.5 million people homeless.

The Ethnic Nationalities Council (ENC) believes that political crisis in Burma is not just ideological confrontation between military dictatorship and democracy but a constitutional problem rooted in the denial of the rights of ethnic nationalities who joined the Union of Burma as equal partners in 1947 at Panglong Conference.

    The FCDCC Press Conference

A milestone occurred this week in the history of Burma’s long struggle toward democracy. On this auspicious day of the 61st anniversary of the Union Day, the Federal Constitution Drafting and Coordinating Committee (FCDCC) adopted the second draft of the constitution “Federal Republic of the Union of Burma” based on democracy, federalism, equality, and self-determination for all the people of Burma, which has been drawn up in accordance with the 8 Basic Principles adopted since February 12, 2005.

    Demanding to stop secret cooperation

A major rally to demand that the Australian government “stop its secret cooperation” with the Burmese Military Junta will be held in Sydney on November 15. The rally organised by the Sydney based Joint Action Committee for Democracy in Burma (JACDB) will take place at Martin Place , Sydney. JACDB co-ordinator, Dr Aye Kyaw told NewsDay they also want the Australian Government to pressure the Chinese Government and ASEAN countries to take action against Burma.

The people and monks of Burma are demonstrating against the oppression of the dictators of Burma who have made life miserable for the people of Burma and who have led the country into ruin. The people demand a democracy but the dictators have refused this.

The R.C.S.S stands with the people and monks of Burma as the dictators use violence against them. We are ready to help and protect the people and the monks.

    (Statement No. 5/2007) 10 September 2007

The ENC welcomes the international community's condemnations on the junta leaders' "tyrannical behaviour" and recent violent crackdown in Burma. The ENC would like to congratulate the political courage shown by the world leaders, especially Mrs Laura Bush for her long-standing concern about Burma. Word alone, however, is not enough. Action is needed. The ENC thus calls upon the international community to respond to the situation in Burma more quickly with substantive actions. "We welcome the recent UN Security Council resolution on Darfur, but the situation in Burma is the same as in Darfur, if not worse", said ENC Chairman Saw Ba Thin.

The 6th ENC State Constitutions Seminar
